Diesel Mechanic

  • $39.66 per hour casual rates + super
  • Ongoing with a view to full time
  • Roster: Mon – Fri 7:00AM – 3:30PM

The Role

Your primary purpose in this position is:

  • To maintain Council’s Fleet and Plant (including light equipment) to industry accepted standards and to ensure that fleet downtime is kept to a minimum.
  • To take a leadership role in supervising apprentices as required and to mentor less experienced mechanics.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Ensure Council vehicles, plant and light equipment is maintained and serviced in accordance with OEM manufacturer’s specifications and RWC standards.
  • Ensure Business Units and other Departments are not unnecessarily delayed due to down time on servicing or repairing of plant items.
  • Participate in a breakdown emergency callout service (as required).
  • Maintain cleanliness and serviceability of workshop, tools and workshop equipment.
  • Supervise apprentices and work experience students when working with them.
  • Ensure repair job sheets are raised via the electronic Fleet Management Information System (FMIS) and correctly costed and documented.
  • Responsible for maintenance of correct stock levels for scheduled servicing raising purchase orders for spare parts and verifying goods received against ordered items.
  • Organise duty rosters, eg: early morning starts and callout service, etc
  • Undertake Emergency Management duties as required,
  • Maintain the strictest confidentiality regarding ratepayers, customers, and employees,
  • At all times, behave in a manner consistent with personal and professional workplace standards outlined in the Council’s Code of Conduct and human resource policies and guidelines (including Human Rights & Equal Opportunity, Prevention of Bullying & Violence in the Workplace, Harassment-Free Workplace),
  • Ensure compliance with relevant OH&S regulatory requirements and implement, promote, and maintain Council’s OH&S and return to work (RTW) policies, procedures, and training programs and perform other duties as directed within the limits of acquired skills, knowledge, and training. (for employees with supervisory responsibilities),
  • Ability to work with diversity within the workplace and community.

To be considerd for this role you should have:

  • Heavy Rigid Drivers licence.
  • Trade Certificate (Diesel Mechanic)
  • Arc, Oxygen, and Mig welding experience
  • Good understanding of all vehicles' Roadworthy and plant safety regulations.
  • Extensive experience in servicing and repairing trucks and agricultural equipment.
  • Team Player: Must work effectively in a team and be committed to public service.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to advise, liaise and negotiate.
  • Ability to commit to rosters with a proven track record of good attendance and punctuality.

Desirable:

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic experience.
  • Computer and administration skills.
  • Forklift/loader licence.
